What I did was use a Challah mix I found at the grocery store in the Kosher section of the store. It was OK and it turned out OK but I think I like my grandmother's braided egg bread recipe better. With doing some recipe research they seem to be similar in nature. What I did notice is that challah bread calls for honey in the recipe and my grandmother's recipe does not. Remember, I was not baking this out of the attitude that this bread is better than that one. This was baked with curiosity behind it.
Years ago a group of church friends would gather on the weekend at a person's home and we would fellowship, eat and then pray and Holy Spirit would show up in a mighty way in this home gathering. We would take communion and I would sometimes bake my grandmother's bread recipe and that would be used for communion. I actually printed her recipe and named it "Communion Braided Bread." Isn't that funny? I will share her recipe with you today.
I generally speaking do not eat bread with yeast in it. Today after the challah bread cooled and before I wrapped it up I felt led by Holy Spirit to break off an end piece and to have communion. You see I carry on silent conversations with Holy Spirit and I said to Him I do not have any juice at home. He reminded me I did have V-8 juice. So, I knelt right there in my kitchen and had communion. As I was breaking the bread and drinking the juice I was reminded that the color of V-8 vegetable juice is red in color. How poetic that the juice represents the blood of Jesus in communion and I am drinking a vegetable juice red in color. As I knelt there and had communion I began to have tears when thanking Him for all that He is doing in my life now. I am having accelerated experiences and dreams also now. For such a time as this in my life. The other day I exercised with praying in tongues and I did not share with you what happened early the next morning. Around 4AM. I had a very vivid dream and it was again one of those dreams in which Holy Spirit confirmed it was from Him and I had to now participate in the response to the dream given to me. Right after the dream Holy Spirit directed me with the response to the dream. I heard Him as clear as can be, He gave me the specific words to share as a response to the dream given and they were to be sent forth with angels taking them. When you have child like faith you trust Holy Spirit and say OK at His guidance.
So I am seeing a correlation here. Listening to praise/worship a good majority of your day along with praying in tongues I believe opens up an avenue for Holy Spirit to minister to you and that is a very good thing.
Here is Grandma's braided bread recipe. If I remember correctly the old recipe I thought was called "Mama's Bread." It has been a family favorite throughout the years.
I use 5-5 1/2 cups of flour and 1/2 cup when kneading the bread. Make sure you sift the flour before using it.
2 eggs
1 cup scalded milk
2 tsp. salt
1 stick of butter or margarine (I use butter and do not use margarine)
1 package dry yeast or small cake dissolved in 1/2 cup lukewarm water
1/2 cup sugar
yields 2 loaves of bread
Add butter to scalded milk; then add salt and sugar. Let cool to lukewarm. In large bowl, beat eggs; add yeast and cooled liquids. Add 2 cups of flour and beat with wooden spoon. Add 2 more cups of flour and blend in well. Continue adding flour slowly, blending after each addition, until dough forms a ball. Turn out on lightly floured surface and knead the dough until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes.)
Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size-cover with a lightly floured cloth. Divide the dough in half. Then divide each half into 3 parts. Roll each part into a rope about 12 inches long or so. Place the 3 rolls on a greased cookie sheet and braid the 3 rolls together, tuck under he ends. Do the same with the other half of the dough. Cover and let rise until double. Brush the top of the loaves with a beaten egg. Bake in pre-heated oven 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes When I remove it from the oven while still hot I take butter and let it melt over the bread.
Happy baking to you. I did learn with searching for challah recipes that I think this bread would be enhanced if after brushing on the beaten egg to possibly sprinkle on top of that either sesame seeds or poppy seeds.
Please note; I do use my Kitchen Aid mixer with the dough hook attachment when making this recipe. It is much easier than blending with a wooden spoon.
